Description

Note: This product spec has been updated to 1952F which is a fast dry formula with low VOCs and higher durability.

Do you need a slower-drying paint that won't clog tips and dry so fast you can't work with it during hot summer days?

The older Federal spec TTP 1952B was originally specified as a normal drying paint but was later replaced by fast-drying alternatives.  While fast dry paints are great for opening traffic fast, they aren't so great on hot summer days or when you need to apply glass beads by hand.  This paint conforms to the outdated but still viable Federal Specification TT-P-1952B, a normal drying traffic paint that has been replaced by the newer fast dry 1952F Type I. As long as you are not using this on parking lots that are state or federal properties, you can safely use this paint.

While the 1952b is no longer a Federal spec paint, we still sell it as a durable, water-based, ready-to-spray parking lot paint for line striping professionals and commercial DIY property managers.  This paint has been extremely popular over the years as a great overall parking lot paint where normal drying paints are needed.

Buy as single 5-gallon buckets or buy 6 or more in bulk and save money.

Where this older specification shines over the newer 1952F is when you need a slower-drying paint that won't clog tips or dry so fast you can't apply beads by hand.  Some line stripers find that on a hot summer day, the fast-dry paints will dry so fast it clogs their tips and equipment.  They would rather go with a slower paint that is more forgiving and easier to use for jobs where federal paint isn't required.

So when are federal paints required?  If you're painting on Federally-funded property or state-funded property, you are better off sticking with the federal spec or paints that are on the state APL/QPL.  Parking lots are fine, and even city or county roads are fine too as long as the governing board approves it.  Airports that do not get the majority of funding from the federal government can use this paint as well.  Just be mindful of "where the money comes from" and that will help you decide if you can use the older out-of-spec 1952B or if you need to move to the newer in-spec 1952F.

This water-based paint can be used on both asphalt and concrete but it is NOT recommended as turf marking or field marking paint. We carry a line of paint that is specifically designed for that environment. Contact us for details or visit our field marking website for grass paints.

Quality

We only sell paint that is guaranteed to be top quality commercial parking lot, curb and traffic paint. Our paint will equally match and usually beats anything you can buy at the store. We ship all of our paint straight from the manufacturing plant which means your paint is fresh by the time you get it, unlike the paint that might sit on the store shelf for a few months and believe it or not, will get recycled if it sits too long... Our paint is fresh, not blended or recycled.

The other thing we should mention about the quality is that our paint is colored with powder based pigments. Other manufacturers, even some of the well known ones, use liquid based pigments and those tend to fade a lot sooner than powder based pigment.

Water Based vs Solvent Based

If you are wondering if you need water based or solvent oil based paint, it really all comes down to preference and local code requirements. While many municipalities and cities don't have any specific codes on which paint you can use, some have started enforcing the use of only water based paint due to it's environmental friendliness. Oil based paints tend to leave harmful residues that drain into the ground and water, even after it has dried. Painters in northern states like to use the oil based paint because it can be applied in colder weather, unlike water based paints that tend to freeze.

Still not sure if this is the paint you need? Take a look at our breakdown of paint page for more info.

Usage

Our water based paint is a universal paint that can be used as line paint, road traffic paint, curb and car stop paint and more. The only downside to our universal regular water-based paint is that it does take a bit more time to dry when compared to our FAST-DRY paint. Dry time for one coat is usually 30 minutes or less but might take up to 40 minutes in cooler weather. Ask yourself this question: "Do I need more than one coat and or do I need to have traffic back on my parking lot in a very short amount of time?" If you answered yes to either or both of these question, you might want to take a look at our FAST-DRY water-based paint instead which will dry in a fraction of the time when compared to our regular paint.

Coverage

Understanding the coverage of the paint is an important factor when line striping. The typical airless line striper will produce a line that is 15 mils in thickness, but first, how thick is 15 mils, second, what if I'm not using an airless line striper and third, what about the surface condition? Actual coverage of this paint can be found in the specifications area.

How thick is 15 mils?
Well, 1 mil stands for "1 Thousandth of an Inch". It's small. So, 15 mils is 15 thousandth of an inch which is the same as 1/64 of an inch. To give an idea of how thick 15 mils really is, we'll show you a few common items and their thickness:

  • Typical Credit Card: 30 mils (.030 in) [0.762 mm]
  • US Dollar Bill: 5 mils (.005 in) [0.127 mm]
  • Finger Nail: 13 mils (.013 in) [.3302 mm]

So, if you take 3 crisp US currency bills and stack them together, you will have 15 mils of thickness, or you can look at the thickness of your (unpainted) fingernail for a quick reference.

What if I'm not using an airless striper?
When using a roller or brush to apply paint, the thickness will vary between the roller style and how much paint you actually put down. The main rule of thumb though, is that you will double the amount of paint. Using a roller usually applies a thicker coat of paint. In some cases, if you're conservative with how much you put down, you can acually use less paint.

What do I need to know about the surface condition?
The surface area of section you will paint can also make a big difference with how much paint you use. Especially if you aren't using an airless paint system. Rough pavement like older ashpalt that has a lot of aggregate showing, has a larger surface area and will take more paint. In contrast, a smooth concrete surface has a lower surface area and won't take as much paint. We don't have a guide or calculator at this time to take the different surfaces into consideration, just know that you might need a bit more paint if you're painting a rough area.

Custom Gray Colors
There are so many different shades of gray, it is difficult for us to offer a "base gray" color of paint, and have it match your environment. As suggested from our supplier, we recommend that you purchase both "White" and "Black" colors, then mix them together to achieve the color of gray you need. We understand this presents additional cost for the project and we apologize for the inconvenience, however, if you aren't picky about the color of gray you need, feel free to browse our Custom Color Palette and choose a gray. (30 gallon minimum on custom gray)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this paint non-slippery?

All of our paints meet or exceed the Federal specifications for "slippery" conditions. If you need additional abrasive properties for your paint application, we recommend that you lightly sand the painted surface by hand.

Can I add abbrasives to the paint?

Short Answer: yes - You can add sand or abrasives to the paint without damaging the chemical makeup of the paint.

We personally recommend that you add sand or abrasives to the paint by hand though, especially if you are applying stripes with a line striping machine. Abrasive materials tend to clog the spray tip or paint applicator which is why we recommend adding abrasives by hand instead of adding it to the paint. Check with your line striping manufacturer before adding any type of abrasives to the paint.

Do I need to dilute this paint to use in my line striper?

Short Answer: No - Our paint is specifically made with pressure line striping machines in mind. You can also use this paint with roller style line stripers as well.

Will this paint adhere to asphalt with a sealer on it?

Short Answer: Yes - The paint we offer is especially designed as "road marking paint". Pretty much any type of asphalt or concrete surface you want to use this product on, it will adhere to (including sealcoated surfaces). One thing to keep in mind, is that our paints all meet "Federal Specifications". If the Government didn't sign off on our paint as road worthy, we wouldn't be selling it.

Is field marking paint the same as traffic paint?

Simple Answer: No - Field marking paint has a special formula to be environmentally safe on real grass. It is also designed to be easy to remove from both grass turf and fake field turf. If you're interested in field marking paint, we do offer it but don't have it on our website. Call us for more information: +1(800) 689-2098
