Airport The BIG A 2-18X is the next step up in the portable infrared asphalt heater line. Compared to our BIG A BL 2-16 which has a heating surface of 16 sq ft, this unit can heat an area up to 22.75 sq ft, giving you an extra 6 sq ft of heating area. Unlike the more compact and square design of the LB 2-16, the BIG A KM 2-18X portable infrared asphalt heater is a solid unit that can be rolled around on independent steel caster wheels and has a more rectangular shape which is perfect for wide cracks. The unit holds two (2) 30 lb propane bottles (not included) that fuel dual (2) heating zones made with 1” ceramic refractory blankets. Each heating zone on this infrared heater measures in at 3’ 3” x 3’ 6”, giving you 11.375 sq ft of heating area per zone and a grand total of 22.75 sq ft. Pair this portable infrared asphalt heater with a hot asphalt mix hauler and you'll hit the ground running.
The main purpose of using a portable infrared asphalt heater, is to in-place recycle existing asphalt by raising it to the temperature that is required for proper hot mix asphalt. (usually around 350º F)
By raising the temperature of the existing asphalt and softening the existing binder, it allows the old asphalt to be re-used, rejuvenated and mixed with new patch to creates a "like new" patch, without the overhead of cutting out the entire asphalt section and filling it back in with all new hot asphalt patch. In reality, the only time a full cut and replacement is necessary is when the sub-grade needs fixing. Why go to the trouble of cutting and removing the old when you can simply just re-use it in place?
The biggest benefit to the BIG A KM 2-18X portable infrared asphalt heater is the long but thin design. Weighing in at 410 lbs, it does take a crew of several guys to effectively move this unit but with the extra heating area and rectangular design, you gain the ability to not only patch dips across roads, but you can also patch large cracks without heating areas of the asphalt that aren't damaged.
Using a portable infrared asphalt heater isn't hard, but does require steps to ensure the right work is performed.
The BIG A KM 2-18X heating is controlled by an automatic timed on/off heating cycle, setup to be 53 seconds on and 10 seconds off. This maintains proper temperature within the heating elements and allows a more efficient use of fuel consumption. By alternating the heating cycles on this portable infrared asphalt heater, it minimizes the chance of burning the asphalt. In addition, this unit is built with a one shot timer that will turn off after 10 minutes of heating to eliminate the potential cooking or overheating of the asphalt.
