Quick Overview:
  • Open cell foam tubing made for crack filling backer
  • Great for asphalt or concrete and works better than sand
  • Lasts for several years
  • Reduces wasted crackfill material

Description

Asphalt Crack Backer Rod is designed for the purpose of "Pre-Filling" cracks in asphalt or concrete, that are deeper than 1/2" in depth where a sealant will be applied to the crack over the foam.  This reduces the amount of sealer needed and provides a longer lifespan of the sealants with minimal future maintenance.

This foam backer is an open-cell polyurethane that expands and seals the crack prior to the crack sealing process so that the new rubber material won't bottom out in the crack, this also saves you a great deal of material.

Some Asphalt Crack Filling professionals use fine sand for this purpose. Using sand works well in most applications and is usually easy to come by. On the downside, the problem you may encounter using sand is that when the crack expands (and it will) due to heat or cold temperature changes, the sand has a tendency to fall deeper into the crack or as the crack widens the sand will not support new sealer.

Asphalt Crack Backer Rod is installed so it "Pushes" against the side of the crack and as the crack widens, the Backer Rod widens with it because it is constructed from foam rubber.

Asphalt crack backer rod is very easy to install and as the pictures to the right show, simply push the Rod material down into the asphalt crack so you have approximately 1/2" of depth from the rod to the asphalt surface. Next, pour your new Asphalt Crack Filler on top. Both hot and cold-applied sealants can be used with this backer rod, per ASTM-D-5249-95 making it a versatile product that can be applied between temperatures of -60°F to +500° F with an ignition point of 700ºF to 800ºF. It doesn't really matter which hot-applied crack filler you want to use, you won't hurt the backer rod.

Being an open-cell material, this foam allows air to pass through the foam which makes your sealant fully cure all the way through.
