Description

When professional sealcoaters think of adding an aggregate to their sealcoat material, sand is usually the first thing that comes to mind. While sand is usually a good abrasive material to add to coal tar or asphalt emulsion sealers, sand is probably on the bottom of the scale when it comes to performance and visual quality.

The problem you'll run into with sand is that it's better than nothing, but it honestly isn't all that great either. And when the asphalt pavement has had 6 months or more to cure, the top layer wears off the sand granules and shows their true colors, causing a light-speckled look that makes the sealcoat look dark gray instead of a nice flat black.

What we've found, is that using a thru-and-thru black aggregate like our mineral ore slag, keeps the pavement surface looking good even after that top layer begins to wear off and you can mix it in with just about any sealer such as coal tar, asphalt emulsion or acrylic that doesn't already come with an aggregate.

The other distinct feature to a mineral ore slag that makes it such a great alternative to sand in sealcoat sealer, is the jagged and angular profile it has. Clags are very rigid and sharp when compared to the round granules you'll find with sand. In all reality, sand is pretty smooth, almost like glass beads! Why use a smooth surface for traction when you can use a much better material that is even the same color as the sealer?

If you want to try out our BIGA mineral slag on a small job, you can purchase a single bucket from us and give it a go.  What we offer on this page is for the professionals who love the results a better aggregate offers to their sealcoat, and want to save money buying it in bulk.

You'll get a full pallet of mineral ore slag abrasive for sealcoating sealer, shipped with 36 buckets that each weigh 50 lbs each, totaling 1800 lbs of aggregate.

Why pay more when you can just use sand?  It all comes down to what you want at the end of the day.  If you've had better than great results with sand, then keep using sand.  But if you've learned over the years that sand doesn't work all that great and want to try something better, here's your answer.

Other Uses

While we market this as an aggregate for the sealcoating industry, it also makes a fantastic aggregate for paint as well. The two main downsides to using this with paint is that you'll want to roll on the paint if you mix it with paint because the aggregate will tear up paint sprayers. You can also sprinkle it on by hand after painting. The other downside is the color. Since this is charcoal black in color, as the paint wears the aggregate color will show through. If you sprinkle on top, you'll get a speckled look.

The other big industry that would use a mineral slag aggregate is the media blasting industry. If you're into sand or media blasting, this is a fantastic alternative to sand and other abrasive medias.
