Description

The Techcrete Ironing Wand is a specialized tool used in the application of hot-applied mastic repair materials, particularly those from the Crafco TechCrete product line. It's a heated hand tool that plays a critical role in the final finishing and consolidation of the repair patch, ensuring a durable, well-bonded, and aesthetically pleasing result.

Leveling and Smoothing the Mastic: After the hot, flowable mastic material (like Mastic One or TechCrete) is poured from a melter into the prepared repair area, the first step is to level it out. While a straight metal or rubber squeegee is used for the initial leveling, the Techcrete Ironing Wand is then used to further smooth the surface and work the material into the edges of the repair. Its heat keeps the mastic pliable, allowing the applicator to create a smooth, consistent finish that is flush with the surrounding pavement.

Expelling Air Bubbles: The application of hot mastic can sometimes trap air bubbles, which can weaken the final repair. By lightly floating the heated ironing wand over the surface, the heat helps to release these bubbles, allowing them to rise and dissipate. This step is crucial for achieving a dense, strong patch free of voids.

Encapsulating Surfacing Aggregate: For some mastic repair applications, a surfacing aggregate (typically a hard, angular stone) is broadcast over the hot patch to improve skid resistance and prevent tracking. The Techcrete Ironing Wand is used to gently press this aggregate into the hot mastic. The key is to apply just enough pressure to embed approximately 50% of the aggregate, leaving the top half exposed for traction. It is critical not to "over-press" and completely submerge the aggregate, as this defeats the purpose.

Creating a Bonded Edge: The heat from the ironing wand helps to slightly melt the edges of the newly applied mastic, creating a seamless, bonded transition with the surrounding cold pavement. This process, often referred to as "feathering" the edge, is essential for a long-lasting, watertight seal that prevents water from seeping underneath the patch.

Achieving Proper Thickness: The ironing wand is also used to manipulate the mastic to ensure the final patch is at the desired thickness. For deeper repairs, where multiple layers are applied, the wand helps to consolidate each lift and prepare the surface for the next. This prevents settling and ensures the final finished surface is level and consistent.

In summary, the Techcrete Ironing Wand is more than just a smoothing tool. It is an integral part of the mastic repair process that serves multiple functions: leveling, bubble expulsion, aggregate embedment, and edge bonding. Its proper use is vital for ensuring the integrity, durability, and a professional finish of the final pavement repair.
