Ennis-Flint PPG 5-Gallon 1-Part PreMark Thermoplastic Sealer 624209-5SL
- 1-Part sealer for Premark and Premark XF preformed thermoplastic
- Used to bond preformed thermoplastic to concrete
Description
The Ennis-Flint Premark Sealer is a primer that is required for installing PreMark and PreMark XF preformed thermoplastics on concrete. It is a near zero VOC transparent acrylic primer used to enhance the bond strength between the road or pavement surface and thermoplastic pavement markings.
While it can be used on asphalt bases, it isn't required and generally isn't recommended. When the asphalt surface is heated, the oils soften and allow the preformed materials to bond with those oils. Concrete doesn't have this property, so a primer sealer is required to create a solid bond between the concrete surface and the thermoplastic.
Extrudes don't need a primer on concrete because the extrude comes out as a liquid and bonds with the pores of concrete but preformed thermoplastic never turns to a full liquid so it can't bond to concrete like extrudes.
Some things to note about the 1-Part sealer. It is a solvent based material, making it flammable and requires special spray applicators (if spraying) that can handle solvents and solvent cleaners.
Universal Usage
Can the Ennis-Flint 1-Part sealer be used as a universal sealer for other brands of preformed thermoplastic?
The short answer is Yes, but it's complicated.
The recommended answer is: Test Before You Commit!
Here's the main issue you may run into. If you use the 1-Part sealer with a different brand of preformed thermoplastic and it pops or doesn't adhere properly, the manufacturer of that thermoplastic is going to point the blame at the Ennis-Flint sealer as the culprit and tell you that you should have used their sealer instead. As such, Ennis-Flint does not recommend this as a Universal Sealer but since most preformed thermoplastics are all made of similar compounds, chances are it will work perfectly fine as a universal sealer.
As long as you understand there may be some complications when using this sealer with other brands of preformed, you can make an informed choice on the best route to take. That's why we recommend to test it first and make sure it's going to work the way you and the customer expect it to work.

Instructions Overview
The 1-Part Sealer can be applied to the road surface either by brush, roller, or sprayer.
When applying, make sure to apply it as a thin, even, uniform coat.
Allow it to dry long enough that the solvents have evaporated and proceed with applying the the PreMark or PreMark XF product based on their respective instruction set.
Keep in mind this is a flammable product! Applying fire to the sealer before it is dry may cause it to catch fire! Keep applicators and material away from open flame!
If spraying, use a metal sprayer that is rated for solvents and solvent cleaners. Keep in mind the sprayer seals need to be able to withstand these types of materials. We do not have a recommendation for sprayer at this time.
For cleanup, use a solvent cleaner such as Toluene or Mineral Spirits.
